Municipality of Salamina

The Municipality of Salaminos is a municipality of the region of Attica that was established under the Kallikratis Program on January 1, 2011 from the merger of the pre-existing municipalities of Salaminos and Ampelakia. The municipality includes Salamina and its neighboring islets. The area of the municipality is 96.09 sq. km and its population of 39,283 inhabitants according to the census of 2011. The seat of the municipality is Salamina. Designation According to mythology, the island got its name from the fairy Salamina whose father was the god Asopus, mother Metopi, sister the fairy Aegina and her husband the god of the sea Poseidon. The name Salamis is already attested in the Homeric epic (Iliad II, 557-558). In ancient times and according to the historical geographer Strabo, Salamis was known by the names Skiras (from the hero Skyros), Pityousa (pitys = pine) from the many pine trees that existed and Kychreia from Kychrea, who was the son of the fairy Salamis. Cychreus became the first mythical king of Salamis, when he freed it from a terrible dragon, which oppressed and plundered it. Other traditions associate Kychrea with a sacred serpent, which aided the Greek fleet during the Battle of Salamis, confusing the Persian ships. The island has also been known since ancient times under the name Koulouri, which comes from the cape "Koulouris akra" (today Pounta), on which the ancient city and port of the 4th century BC was built. According to Spyridon Lambros, the name Salamina is not Greek. We also find it in Cyprus (in the eponymous city-state of Salamina Cyprus) which was founded by settlers led by Tevkros. Also, the fact that on the island we find the cult of "Zeus Epikinios" (Ba-al Shalam), as well as the position of the island facing a gulf of land, it becomes clear that it has a Semitic root and means "peace" and "place of peace". The modern Salamis Salamina today has the highest population density of all the Greek islands. This is due to its short distance from Athens. At the central port-Ferry of Palukia of Salamina there is a 24-hour ferry connection with Perama. During peak hours, ferries leave every quarter. In addition, from Palukia there is a direct connection to the port of Piraeus. According to Eurostat's data on European passenger traffic, in 2008 and 2009, Palukia of Salamina is in second place on the list and Perama in third place, as 13 million passengers used the ferry line, both in 2008, as in 2009. It is also connected to Nea Peramos by ferry from the port located near the monastery of Panagia Faneromeni. The center of the island has everything a modern city needs for the visitor. In the summer season, it receives thousands of visitors mainly from Piraeus and the surrounding areas for one-day excursions as well as multi-day vacations. Psili Ammos, Peristeria, Aianteio, Kanakia, Selenia, Saterli, Resti, Iliakti, Vasilika, Ag. Giorgis et al. This point of interest is coastal and urban. Suitable Visiting Season: All year round. It is not accessible by public transport. There is no cost or ticket. Visiting hours: Weekdays 8:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Source of photographic material: salamina.gr
